Horsehunter's debut Caged In Flesh

While they maintain the original aspects of what makes this genre great they also bring in contemporary production for a balanced and clear palette.

On the 30th of September Horsehunter released their debut album Caged In Flesh on Band Camp. They state that the album was 2 years in the making and although that seems quite a chunk of time, the results speak for them selves.

Overall the sound is fairly typical of stoner doom metal. While they maintain the original aspects of what makes this genre great they also bring in contemporary production for a balanced and clear palette. The composition is built on proper riffs and subtle rhythmic layers without getting messy and out of control. Caged In Flesh has it all, the slow swamp pace of Earth, the riffs of Sleep, the kick in the guts thunder of YOB and just a touch of the driving chug of ISIS. I might just be in love! If there is any chink to be found in the armor, the closing track Witchery is perhaps a little on the weak side when compared to the behemoth of an opening track Stoned To Death. That being said, this is still a masterfully crafted album and these things always come down to personal taste anyway.

If you’re into any of the spawns of the fabled Black Sabbath then Horsehunter’s Caged In Flesh is for you. If all this has you champing at the bit, jump onto Band Camp and make your ears happy! Here's hoping that it’ll make its mark on vinyl soon too.
