Chelsea Wolfe releases Iron Moon on SoundCloud

Chelsea Wolfe has released Iron Moon, a track from her up coming album Abyss, on SoundCloud. The track builds on the heavier aspects of previous releases bringing about a track that has great dynamic and punch and takes on aspects of the sludgy thump of doom and stoner metal, even if it is a more sedate version. Although this has been present in Chelsea Wolfe's music for sometime, this is first time it has been brought out in an your face way. It's a great track and I personally cant wait to hear the whole album when it is released in August.

Faith No More's Motherfucker!

Faith No More need no introduction for the older generation of music lovers but, it's quite possible with 17 years of absence there is a lot of the younger generation that will have no idea of the brilliance and impact of The Real Thing and Angel Dust.

Motherfucker is the first single from a soon to be released new album. As is usual for Faith No More the opening of the single requires a slight adjustment to get to grips with as it diverges from their previous work. The single is rhythmic and driven with a sense of anticipation. Once into the song there is no doubt that this is the new incarnation of Faith No More as Mike Patton's vocals cover familiar melodic territory as if to reassure the listener that there is still a good part of the real thing in there.

If past albums are anything to go by, this should be a great addition to Faith No More's music. If the title of the single is telling of things to come, we should be in store for a great album with a nice bit of grit, edge and tongue in cheek. I for one am eager as a kindergarden kid to hear the album in full.

New rumblings from Soundgarden

On the 27th of October Soundgarden released Storm, a glimpse of what is part of the bands slow comeback. Although the song itself is not mind blowing it's most certainly typical of the Soundgarden sound. Storm is a rhythmic with a nice bit of drive wrapped in a pleasant Psychedelic goo. If you don't instantly fall in love with the song, give it a few more listens. You may just find that it grows on you.

Robot Push Key releases Chrysalis

The combination of which creates a lovely echoey chamber of sound that clangs and rattles along like an old freight train.

Stockholm based electronic artist Robot Push Key has released Chrysalis. The single is full of old school blip bloppery, static and crunchiness. The combination of which creates a lovely echoey chamber of sound that clangs and rattles along like an old freight train. Cranking up the anti, distorted synths are added to the mix bringing a new level of texture to the chaos. This might sound like there is nothing holding the piece together but the simple yet solid bass lines and drums keep the whole thing pounding along steady and strong. Like all good singles there are two extra tracks that can be seen in the traditional sense as B sides. The first Stereocilia offers up a similar style and quirkiness as Chrysalis but with a little more emphasis on the beat and bass line. Ending the single with Sacred Geometry we are thrust into an abstract broken down version of the sound theme. This is a glorious derailment of the whole three tracks with moments of clarity ending in an abrupt meltdown.

Robot Push Key brings together wonderful chaos and old school sounds solidly underpinned with beats and bass lines. Although Chrysalis offers no vocals, fans of Throbbing Gristle and the like would certainly get some pleasure out this wonderful single.

If Chrysalis is anything to go by, I absolutely can't wait for the full album release.

As with most music these days, Chrysalis is available through almost all major streaming services. Check it out on Band Camp

New Melvins album Hold It In due out in October

The Melvins are due to release Hold It In sometime in October this year. Interestingly Jeff Pinkus and Paul Leary of the Butthole Surfers have been confirmed as part of the studio line up on it. Here's hoping that the new release is as brilliant and innovative as other work released by the Melvins.

Sleep releases new track The Clarity

Was there perhaps an overzealous expectation for that distinct and all important hemorrhage inducing bottom end rumble that has become predominant in modern doom and stoner metal?

With many years since their last release and a slow move out of hibernation over the past few years playing gigs, Sleep have finally released a new track The Clarity. The track comes courtesy of Adult Swim's Weekly Singles series.

Although in many ways The Clarity is typical of the stoner legends it feels ever so slightly lacking when compared to Holy Mountain and Dopesmoker. The production of the track is cleaned up, polished and feels as though it lacks a little in grit and grunt. Was there perhaps an overzealous expectation for that distinct and all important hemorrhage inducing bottom end rumble that has become predominant in modern doom and stoner metal? Even with the volume cranked up there was no thundering bass and distortion. Where was that overwhelming saturation of sound? Mix and production aside, the composition of The Clarity is certainly inline with any avid Sleep fan's expectations and it will without doubt be exciting to hear what the rest of the album has in store.

On a personal note, I really hope that this is just the warmup to a mind bending, heavy as center blocks album that I'm sure all Sleep fans are fervently awaiting.

Electric Wizard release teaser "I Am Nothing"

This is super fat fuzz spewed out in a manor that only Electric Wizard can.

After four years of brooding in silence the masters of doom Electric Wizard have released a new track I Am Nothing from their impending album Time To Die.

Guitars thunder while the bass sends tremors capable of cracking the earth, the sound almost swallowing the drums and vocals in a psychedelic swirl of madness. This is super fat fuzz spewed out in a manor that only Electric Wizard can. The album is due out on the 30th of September through Spinefarm Records and I absolutely can not wait!

YOB re-release The Great Cessation

Fantastically bleak, heavy and hypnotic. This is proper DOOM!

For those who missed this brilliant piece of music back in 2009 YOB has re-released The Great Cessation. Fantastically bleak, heavy and hypnotic. This is proper DOOM!

The riffs chug on at a mostly slow but crushing pace typical to great doom metal. The wildly demonic and varied vocals of Mike Scheidt together with sections of overlaid echoey distorted guitars produces sections of sound much like some kind of ancient doom machine that threatens to strip your soul. This in combination with the brutal rhythm section produces wonderful peaks, troughs and plateaus that provide great dynamics. From the beginning you get a distinct feeling of desperation. This is then contrasted with an ethereal floating dream state that balances out the destruction. As you pass the middle of the album the music takes on a more powerful form with a beautiful combination of uplifting and melancholic cords that push and pull you onward. As the end nears the music takes on the heavy riffs and chaotic solos of doom metal thrusting you in through the out door.

This is an album that allows your mind to get involved with it in a rather mediative way. If you really want to understand what doom is about, this is not a bad place to get your first taste. Like many of these great releases you can check it out before you put up your cash on Band Camp.

Godflesh release - Ringer

In typical Godflesh style the music grinds and pounds on like an industrial meat grinder with thick distortion and minimal effects and samples.

It's been a long time coming but after being in hiatus Godflesh have released Ringer. Ringer is a track fresh off the slab from the new EP Decline And Fall which is set for release in June this year. Ringer has the tight and up in your face presence that is reminiscent of Godflesh's self titled album. In typical Godflesh style the music grinds and pounds on like an industrial meat grinder with thick distortion and minimal effects and samples. If this is anything to go by the new EP should be killer! If this was not enough for Godflesh fans, there is to be a full length album A World Lit Only By Fire which is said to be coming out toward the end of the year!

Godflesh will be putting on a few shows in the UK: Monday 2nd of June at SWG3 in Glasgow, Tuesday 3rd of June at Cockpit in Leeds and two shows at Heaven in London on Wednesday the 3rd and Thursday the 4th of June. Hopefully this is just the warm up for a longer tour and a visit to the EU mainland and other parts of the world.

Hold onto to your arses mates, this is going to get wild! Not convinced? Have a listen for your self on Sound Cloud
